About "The Lady in Black"

Ahoy, Mates!

So we meet again! How are you? Feeling grand? I do hope so.

In this post, I am supposed to make a summary and describe about the characters, plot, settings, and moral values of a short story. The short story I chose was "The Lady in Black" by Eleanor H. Porter.

Enough with the chit-chat and let's start!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary

There was a mother, named Helen, who always wore black. She was mourning over the loss of her daughter. She was so sad, that she refused to care about her son and husband. Instead, she was mad that her husband and son could still smile and play together after the death of the daughter and ran to see her daughter's grave.

When she was there, she met a woman, placing flowers on another grave near her daughter's grave. She talked to her and found out that she was not the mother of the young boy in the grave. She was only his nurse. She cared for his grave because no one was left to care.

Helen asked why, the lady said that the mother of the boy was so sad that she forgot about her husband and daughter. She died, and her husband followed after her. The daughter left to find a place where she could find happiness, since she didn't get one on that house.

Hearing the story, the Lady in Black shivered. She was scared. She hurried back home and cried. Time passed, and she no longer walked down the stairs slowly. She wore a white dress and a white flower on her head, despite having trace of tears on her face. She heard her son called her, and she embraced little Bobby in her arms.

Characters

There are four characters in the story. Lady in Black was endearing, she loved her daughter deeply, even if she forgot about her family for a moment, she came back to her senses and back to being a loving mother. The husband was caring and tried to help his wives get over their daughter's death. Bobby was a cute boy who wanted his mother's attention. The lady at the graveyard was a nice and caring lady, for she cared about the little boy, even if he was not hers.

Plot

This story has a plot of a sad mother who forgot her families and realized her mistake through a story about a mother in similar situation with her from a lady she met.

Settings

The story took place in the Lady in Black's house and the graveyard. It was not stated in which country and which years the story occurs.

Moral Values

I think the moral of this story is that, we shouldn't dwell in the past. We are allowed to be sad and mourn, but after that we have to move on and face the present.
